The company visit conducted by Master of Accounting students of UPN “Veteran” Yogyakarta from June 4–6, 2024, to PT Bumi Suksesindo (BSI), located in the Tumpang Pitu mining area, Pesanggaran, was part of an initiative to enhance students’ practical understanding of accounting applications in the mining industry. As a leading gold and silver mining company, PT BSI provided a relevant and strategic setting for students to gain insights into accounting practices within the extractive sector, which is characterized by complexity and high risk.

During the visit, students received comprehensive explanations of the company’s business processes, covering exploration, mining operations, and mineral processing. They also gained a deeper understanding of the company’s financial management system, including the recognition and measurement of mining assets, as well as the application of accounting standards relevant to the industry. Key topics such as production cost management, long-term investment, and internal control systems further enriched students’ knowledge.

The program also highlighted important aspects of good corporate governance, risk management, and environmental, social, and governance (ESG) practices. PT BSI presented its commitment to sustainable mining through initiatives such as land reclamation, waste management, and community empowerment. These insights provided students with a broader perspective on the integration of financial performance and corporate social responsibility.

Direct interaction between students and industry practitioners was a key value of this activity. Discussions addressed strategic issues such as financial reporting transparency in the mining sector, challenges related to commodity price fluctuations, and regulatory dynamics affecting company operations. Through these exchanges, students developed a more applied and contextual understanding of real-world practices.

In addition to its academic benefits, this activity also strengthened the relationship between the Master of Accounting Program at UPN “Veteran” Yogyakarta and the mining industry. It is expected that this collaboration will continue through initiatives such as joint research, guest lectures, and student competency development programs.

Overall, the company visit provided valuable experiential learning for students in understanding accounting practices in the mining industry. It not only enhanced academic competence but also equipped students with professional insights relevant to the demands of the extractive sector.
